Déborah Rodríguez , full name Déborah Lizeth Rodríguez Guelmo , (born December 2, 1992 in Montevideo ) is a Uruguayan athlete who is active as a hurdler , sprinter and middle distance runner .

Career

Junior period

Rodríguez, whose father was a soccer player and whose mother was a runner, started playing at the age of four. At the age of 14 she represented her home country for the first time at the Torneo Nacional Argentino and at the Youth World Cup in the Czech Republic. She won gold at the Torneo Nacional de Menores in Uruguay in 2006, 2007 and 2008 over the 400-meter and 400-meter hurdles . In 2007, 2009 and 2010 she also advanced to the title holder of the 400 meter and 400 meter hurdles at the Uruguayan Junior Championships . In 2008, the Uruguayan athlete crossed the finish line as the winner of the South American Junior Athletics Championships in Uruguay in these two running competitions. In the 400-meter hurdles race, she successfully defended her junior South American title in 2009 in the relevant competitions in São Paulo, Brazil, and was again the title holder over this distance at the 2011 South American Junior Championships in Medellín. At the 2009 World Youth Championships in Bressanone , Rodríguez added a bronze over 400 meter hurdles to her collection of medals.

Seniors

At the World Athletics Championships in Berlin in 2009 , she was eliminated over 400 m hurdles in the preliminary run with a Uruguayan record time (59.21 seconds). Respectively over the 400-meter hurdles distance they erlief in 2010 in Medellin oriented South America playing the silver medal (59.76 seconds) and finished at the South American Championships in Athletics 2011 in Buenos Aires the third rank. In 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011 she also won gold medals in her home country over the 400 meters, 800 meters and the 400 meter hurdles at the Uruguayan championships . At the Pan American Games in Guadalajara in 2011 , Rodríguez also represented her home country in the 400-meter hurdles discipline. There she was eliminated as well as at the World Championships in Daegu over 400 m hurdles in the preliminary run.

Rodríguez was the youngest female athlete in the Uruguayan squad for the 2012 Olympic Games . Rodríguez started there over the 400-meter hurdle route. Although she was eliminated in the preliminary stages, she came in 28th as the best South American woman in the competition. In this race she improved her previous record of 58.63 seconds in this discipline to the Uruguayan record of 57.04 seconds. In addition, on August 25, 2012 at the U23 national championships in São Paulo , she improved the national record Margarita Gruns (54.39 seconds) over 400 meters to 53.98 seconds, which has existed since 1985 .

The 1.74 meter tall athlete belongs to the Campus de Maldonado club in Maldonado , where she has been living and training for four years (as of 2012). For the post-Olympic year she won the silver medal in the 400 meter hurdles at the 2013 South American Athletics Championships in Caratgena, Colombia. As part of her participation in the 2014 South American Games in Santiago de Chile , she won the 400 meter hurdles and the gold medal over 800 meters. At the Ibero-American Championships in 2014 in August, she took silver in the 400 meter hurdles. In the same month she became four times Uruguayan champion over 100 meters, 200 meters, 400 meters and 400 meters hurdles. In October of that year, she added the three South American championship titles at the U-23 South American Championships in Montevideo over 400 meters, 800 meters and 400 meters hurdles to her track record, as well as a bronze medal with the Uruguayan 4 × 400 meter relay.

On May 30, 2015 in Belgium at the Putbosmeeting in Oordegem-Lede , she improved the Uruguayan record set in Spain in July 2014 (2: 05.67 minutes) over the 800-meter distance to 2: 02.96 minutes.

In June 2015 she took part in the 2015 South American Athletics Championships in Lima. There she became the South American champion on the 400-meter hurdles and on the 800-meter course, each with a personal best in the final run. At the Pan American Games in 2015 , she was supposed to be the flag bearer of the Uruguayan team. However, she was ultimately unable to fulfill this role due to organizational problems affecting her journey to Canada and was replaced in this role by Dolores Moreira . In the competitions in Toronto , she won the bronze medal over the 400 meter hurdles distance.

Awards

As part of the honors of the best Uruguayan athletes of the period 2009-2010 ("Deportista del Año"), she was honored on March 28, 2011 by the Comité Olímpico Uruguayo in the Teatro Solís as the best junior athlete of 2009 in the category "Athletics" .
