Career

At the age of 17, Conceição Geremias won three gold medals in the 100-meter run and in both relays, as well as one silver and one bronze medal at the 1974 South American Championships . The following year she only competed in the pentathlon and won safely in front of her compatriot Themis Zambrzycki . In 1977 Geremias defended her title seven points ahead of Zambrzycki, in 1979 she was defeated by her rival. At the 1980 Olympic Games , she finished 14th in the pentathlon, making her the best non-European woman.

At the South American Championships in La Paz in 1981, the pentathlon was replaced by the heptathlon, but Geremias did not appear here. She won gold medals in the 400 meter hurdles , in the long jump and with the sprint relay . This made her the first South American female champion over 400 meter hurdles. Two years later she won the first heptathlon at the Pan American Games when she won in Caracas with 6084 points and 16 points ahead of the American Cindy Greiner , the 6084 points remained Geremias' best performance and correspond to 6017 points according to today's scoring. A good month later, she defended her title in the 400-meter hurdles at the South American Championships and also won the heptathlon. At the Olympic Games in 1984 Geremias retired in the long jump qualification and gave up in the heptathlon.

In 1985 she did not appear in the heptathlon at the South American Championships, but won her second title in the long jump. In 1987 and 1989 she won the heptathlon, in between she reached 22nd place in this discipline at the 1988 Olympic Games . In 1991 and 1993 she won silver in the heptathlon at the South American Championships behind the Colombian Zorobabelia Córdoba . In 1993 she also received the bronze medal when the triple jump was held for the first time. In 1995 she won a medal again in a discipline held for the first time: silver in the pole vault.
