South American Athletics Championships 1977
The XXIX. The South American Athletics Championships took place in Montevideo from November 4 to 6, 1977 . For the first time in 57 years, the event only lasted three days.
The most successful participant was the Brazilian sprinter Rui da Silva with three gold medals. In the women’s category, Beatriz Allocco from Argentina also won three gold medals.
Men's competitions
The men's team championship was won by the Brazilian team with 241 points, ahead of the Venezuelans with 112 points and the Colombian team with 110 points and the Argentines with 103 points. Behind the Chileans with 56 points, the Uruguayans achieved 23 points, followed by Paraguay with 12 points, Peru with 10 points and Bolivia with 7 points.
