1974 South American Athletics Championships

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The XXVII. The South American Athletics Championships were held from April 16 to 21, 1974 in Santiago de Chile . The event was actually scheduled for October 1973, after the military coup of September 11, 1973, the event was postponed.

The men’s 20-kilometer walk, the 1500-meter run and the 4-by-400-meter relay for women were held for the first time. The most successful participant was the Brazilian sprinter Rui da Silva with three gold medals. His compatriot Conceição Geremias also won three gold medals as well as one silver and one bronze medal. The victory of the Venezuelan men's team was the last victory of a non-Brazilian team to date (as of 2009). In 1974, after the Argentine victory in 1971, the Brazilian women began their winning streak, which continues to this day.

Men's competitions

The men's team championship was won by the Venezuelan team with 163 points, ahead of the Brazilian team with 160 points and the Chileans with 113 points. Behind the Argentines with 95 points, the Colombians achieved 57 points ahead of Peru with 26 points. The Paraguayans received 22 points and Uruguay 12 points.
