Anatoly Šmigun

Anatoli Šmigun ( Russian Анатолий Иванович Шмигун Anatoli Iwanowitsch Schmigun ; born December 5, 1952 in Slatoust , Russian SFSR , Soviet Union ) is an Estonian cross-country ski trainer and former Soviet cross-country skier. The 1972 European Junior Champion has been the coach of the Šmigun team since 1999 , which also includes his daughter Kristina .

Life

Anatoli Šmigun, who had finished his education at the sports school in Ufa in 1969 , married the Soviet-Estonian cross-country skier Rutt Rehemaa in 1975 , with whom he lived in Tartu, Estonia , since 1976 . Their daughters Kristina and Katrin are or were also active cross-country skiers. Šmigun has been an Estonian citizen since 1995 and currently lives with his family in Otepää . After his daughter Kristina's Olympic victory, Šmigun was awarded the highest national award, the Order of the White Star, third category, by the Estonian President Ilves in March 2006 .

Athletic career

Šmigun won the gold medal over the distance of 10 kilometers and with the Soviet relay at the Junior World Championship in 1972. In 1976 and 1979 he won the Soviet championship over the 70-kilometer distance. From 1974 to 1977 he was part of the Soviet national team. After he became national champion over 70 kilometers and runner-up over 50 kilometers in 1976, he was part of the Soviet team for the Olympic Winter Games in Innsbruck . However, he was not nominated for the competition over 50 kilometers and Yevgeny Belyayev started in his place, who had won the silver medal over 15 kilometers. Belyayev, however, only reached the 38th place. In 1978 Anatoli Šmigun won the Tartu Maraton as did his wife Rutt . From 1977 to 1982 he won seven titles at Estonian championships.

Coaching career

After his sporting career, Šmigun completed training as a coach at the Moscow Institute for Physical Culture and Sport in 1977 and 1988 . From 1982 to 1986 he worked as a coach at his former sports club, Dynamo . Šmigun, who also trained his two daughters, has been a trainer for the Estonian Ski Association since 1986. In 1999 the Šmigun family decided to set up their own private Šmigun team due to the lack of funds from the Estonian Ski Association , which Anatoli Šmigun's nephew Aivar Rehemaa later joined. From 1993 to 1994 he was responsible for the Estonian women's national team. However, due to disputes with the athletes, he gave up this post after a year and has since worked exclusively as a coach for the Šmigun team, which is part of the Estonian national team.
