1979 South American Athletics Championships

The XXX. The South American Athletics Championships took place from October 31 to November 4, 1979 in the Colombian city of Bucaramanga .

The most successful participant was the Brazilian sprinter Altevir de Araújo with two gold medals and one silver medal. In the women's category , the Argentinean Beatriz Allocco won three gold medals.

Men's competitions

The men's team championship was won by the Brazilian team with 189 points, ahead of the Venezuelans with 145 points and the Colombian team with 105 points as well as the Chileans with 94 and the Argentines with 90 points. Behind the Peruvians with 14 points, the Uruguayans got 10 points as did Panama, Bolivia got 9 points and Paraguay got 8 points.
