María Teresa Rodríguez-Rubio Vázquez (born September 18, 1981 in Rota , Cádiz ) is a Spanish teacher, trade unionist, politician and social activist. She is a member of Izquierda Anticapitalista and Podemos and was elected member of the European Parliament in the 2014 European elections as a participant in the list of the latter . She resigned from the European Parliament in March 2015 to run as the top candidate for the regional elections in Andalusia , in which Podemos immediately made it into the regional parliament (15 seats).

Life

Teresa Rodríguez comes from a poor family in the Seville area , her mother earned extra income as a seamstress. She studied Spanish and Arabic Philology in Seville and eventually became a secondary school teacher of Spanish language and literature. She has lived in Cádiz since 2004 .

Political activities and positions

Teresa Rodríguez has been politically active since 1999. She identifies with the demands of the women's movements and feminism. Until 2008 she was politically organized in Izquierda Unida , most recently as a member of its national executive committee. You resigned as a result of differences with the IU leadership. She disagreed with the political basis for government coalitions with the PSOE . In addition, she no longer wanted to support the leadership style and organizational methods of the IU: "I basically moved away from them because of the dynamism of the government pacts with the PSOE, as well as because of the difficulties in combating a certain tendency to professionalise their management structures".

Regarding Podemos and the 2014 European elections , she is of the opinion that Podemos did not necessarily withdraw votes from the IU, but rather from the PSOE . Above all, however, it is about votes from citizens who would otherwise have stayed at home and would not have gone to the polls. “I believe that our votes come mainly from those who did not intend to vote, who wanted to stay home, and from the dissatisfied supporters of the PSOE. IU was able to win votes within the scope provided, which is why we did not occupy a room that would have belonged to them, but were strengthened by a different voter profile ”.

In Podemos, she is particularly committed to organizational issues and advocates maximum internal democracy that can only emerge on the basis of a horizontal grassroots democracy, with equal rights of participation for everyone, regardless of their position in the party. She does not regard this as a given condition, but as an orientation and goal setting. “One should not lose sight of the fact that a process must be set up in which all circles of the organization have the same degree of information, political education, the ability to debate and make decisions, as we did, who made our proposal four months ago: that is the challenge ”.

As a trade unionist for the Andalusian teachers' union USTEA (Unión de Sindicatos de Trabajadores de la Enseñanza de Andalucía), Teresa Rodríguez is also an activist of the Marea Verde (Green Flood) protest movement against budget cuts in the Spanish education system, which has been developing since 2011 and, with the involvement of students and Parents, organized general strikes in the education sector in 2012 and 2013.

In mid-2014 she took part in the movement against a new abortion clause proposed by the ruling party (PP) (the so-called "Ley Gallardón"), which in Spain is supposed to severely restrict women’s right to make decisions in the event of an abortion (in future, abortions would only be after rape or in case of serious health risk). In this context, she sharply criticized the pro-vida positions as hypocrisy and said: You should worry less about what is going on in our wombs and worry more about the children who have already been born and who are without a school canteen during the summer holidays .
