South American Athletics Championships 1961
The XXI. The South American Athletics Championships took place in Lima from May 20 to 28, 1961 . The most successful participant was the Venezuelan sprinter Horacio Esteves with three titles and one silver medal. In the women's category, the Brazilian Wanda dos Santos won three gold medals, her victory in the 60-meter hurdles was the sixth victory in a row. It was only in 2003 that the Brazilian shot putter Elisângela Adriano became the second woman to achieve her sixth consecutive discipline victory.
In the 1950s, the South American Championships were moved to the even years to avoid the Pan American Games . After the Ibero-American Games were held for the first time in addition to the Olympic Games in 1960, the Confederación Sudamericana de Atletismo moved the South American Championships back to the odd years. Although the Ibero-American Games were only played twice, since 1961 the South American Championships have always been held every two years in the odd years, the only exception being the 1974 South American Athletics Championships .
