José Telles da Conceição

José Telles da Conceição (born May 23, 1931 in Rio de Janeiro ; † October 18, 1974 ibid) was a Brazilian athlete who competed internationally in the sprint disciplines, in the hurdles and in three jumping disciplines. His greatest achievement was winning the bronze medal in the high jump at the 1952 Olympics .

Career

In 1951, José Telles da Conceição Pan American Games took part and finished fourth in the high jump. In May 1952 he won the first of ten titles at the South American Championships : he won the high jump with 1.90 meters. In July 1952 he first competed in the Olympic Games in Helsinki in the high jump and crossed 1.98 meters. He won the bronze medal behind the Americans Walt Davis and Ken Wiesner . Three days later, José Telles da Conceição also qualified for the triple jump , but retired with 14.46 meters in the qualification.

At the South American Championships in São Paulo in 1954 , he was the most successful participant with three titles and a silver medal. In the high jump he crossed 2.00 meters, this championship record stood until 1971. In 1955, he won two bronze medals at the Pan American Games in Mexico City with 21.6 seconds in the 200-meter run and 1.91 meters in the high jump, behind two each Americans. In 1956 Conceição skipped the South American Championships in order to concentrate entirely on the Melbourne Olympics , which did not take place until the end of November. There 22 jumpers crossed the qualifying height of 1.92 meters, in the final Conceição only reached 1.86 meters, which meant that he finished in a shared 21st place. In the 200-meter run, he reached the final and finished sixth in 21.3 seconds.

Four years after his three gold medals in São Paulo, José Telles da Conceição was even more successful at the 1958 South American Championships with four gold medals. In his superior victory in the 200-meter run, he had a lead of 0.7 seconds. In 1960 he took part in the Olympic Games for the third time , but was eliminated in the quarter-finals of the 200-meter run.

With a height of 1.86 meters, his competition weight was 74 kilograms.
