Álex Leonardo Quiñónez Martínez (born August 11, 1989 in Esmeraldas ) is an Ecuadorian sprinter . His greatest sporting success to date is winning the bronze medal over 200 m from the 2019 World Championships in Doha. He is also a four-time South American champion.

Athletic career

Álex Quiñónez first took part in international competitions in 2006 at the U18 South American Championships. In the 200- and 400-meter run, he reached the finals and was also able to achieve top positions with the relays. In June 2011, at the age of 21, he first took part in the South American Championships in Buenos Aires. In the 200-meter run, he missed the finals and finished eleventh. With the 4 x 100 meter relay, he finished 5th. In October he also took part in the Pan American Games in Guadalajara. With the relay he finished fifth there in a new national record. He finished sixth in 20.86 s over 200 m.

In 2012 he qualified over 200m for the Olympic Games in London. With 3rd place in his semifinal run he made it into the final over time, in which he was seventh in 20.57 s. In July 2013, the South American Championships took place in Cartagena, Colombia. There Quiñónez won gold over 100 and 200 m and was fourth in both the 4-by-100 and the 4-by-400-meter relay. The World Championships in Moscow followed in August . He failed over 100 m in the preliminary run, in the 200-meter run he finished in the semifinals. In 2014 he took part in the South American Games in Santiago de Chile. Over 100 m he won bronze, over 200 m the silver medal.

In 2015 he again won two gold medals at the South American Championships in Lima, this time over 200 m and with the 4 x 100 meter relay. He also won silver in the 100-meter run. At the Pan American Games in Toronto a month later, he missed the 200m entry into the final. Another month later he was disqualified in the semifinals at the World Championships in Beijing. After a difficult year in 2016, he entered the 2017 South American Championships in Asunción with only the relay with which he finished fourth. In 2018 he accepted the South American Games in Cochabamba, Bolivia. He won silver over 100 m in 10.09 s and won his first gold medal at South American Games in 19.93 s over 200 m.

In May 2019 Quiñónez took part in the IAAF World Relays in Yokohama. There he and his teammates competed in the 4 x 200 meter relay, with which he took tenth place. At the beginning of July, at a meeting in Lausanne, he set a new best time over 200 m in 19.87 s and at the same time improved the South American record. In August he won the 200 m at the Pan American Games in Lima. In October he achieved his greatest sporting success to date by winning the bronze medal in 19.98 s at the World Championships in Doha.
