Esmeraldas is the capital of the province of the same name in northern Ecuador with around 154,000 inhabitants. It is located on the River Esmeraldas , which flows into the Pacific there .
The hot climate, the high proportion of Afro-Ecuadorian population and the lush vegetation give the city a Caribbean flair, even if it is not particularly attractive in terms of urban development. Today you can only find a few of the traditional wooden houses. There are numerous restaurants and bars on the city beach "Las Palmas", which is why the nightlife pulsates here in the evenings and especially on weekends. However, the beach is only partially recommended for swimming, as the proximity of the offshore facility often causes oil to be washed ashore.
politics
Ernesto Estupiñán of the left-wing Movimiento Popular Democrático (MPD) party has been the city's mayor since 2000 . He was confirmed in office in the local elections in October 2004. Lenin Lara Rivadeneira ( PAIS ) has been the city's mayor from 2014 to 2019 .
Religion and education
Esmeraldas is the seat of the Roman Catholic Apostolic Vicariate Esmeraldas . There is also a campus of the Pontifical Catholic University of Ecuador in the city .
Economy and Transport
Esmeraldas has a major seaport on the Pacific. There is also one of three oil refineries in Ecuador, operated by the state company Petroecuador .
Two highways connect the city with the rest of the country: The north-south running E15 from the Colombian border to Salinas runs through the city and the west-east running E20 to Puerto Francisco de Orellana begins here.
environment
Esmeraldas is considered by many to be one of the most dangerous and dirtiest cities in Ecuador, but this can only be partially verified by official statistics. The waste problem of the past has been resolved and soon Esmeraldas will be one of the few cities in Ecuador with a waste separation system.
On February 26, 1998, Esmeraldas was the scene of an environmental disaster when crude oil spilled into the Esmeraldas River and caught fire after an oil pipeline broke. According to the official census, twelve people were killed and hundreds were injured. The effects on the estuary were catastrophic, wiping out 80% of the mangrove swamps .
Town twinning
Twin cities of Esmeraldas are Benidorm on the Costa Blanca and Donostia-San Sebastián in the Basque Country, both in Spain.
