Jorge Daniel Guagua Tamayo (born September 28, 1981 in Esmeraldas ) is an Ecuadorian football player . Guagua is considered to be an attentive, intelligent central defender with a sure passing game, who can also be used in defensive midfield.
Guagua's first club was the subclass Asociación Deportiva Naval in Guayaquil, from which he moved in 1999 first on loan, then definitely to the capital club CD El Nacional , for which he made his first division debut in the 2000 season. Guagua was active for various youth national teams in his country. At the Junior World Cup 2001 he caused a stir in the preliminary round when he did not let the playmaker Rafael van der Vaart develop as a defensive midfielder in a 1-1 draw against the Netherlands . On June 2, 2001 Guagua made his debut in the Ecuadorian national team in the World Cup qualifier against Peru in Lima, which Ecuador won 2-1. He was not nominated for the 2002 World Cup because he was considered too inexperienced for a major tournament. In the 2005 season he was team captain of El Nacional with his team national champion of the Clausura tournament. With El Nacional he took part repeatedly in the Copa Libertadores . After the 2006 World Cup, he moved to CA Colón in Santa Fe in the Argentine Primera División . From here he returned to Ecuador for CS Emelec for the second half of the 2007 season . In 2008 he moved to its city rivals Barcelona SC Guayaquil ; In 2009 he returned to El Nacional in Quito.
Guagua has played 24 international matches in which he scored a goal (as of March 31, 2007) . He was in Ecuador's squad for the 2006 World Cup and was used in the three preliminary round matches. He also took part with the Olympic team of Ecuador in the South American qualifying tournament for the 2004 Summer Olympics, in which Ecuador could not qualify in his group as second behind the eventual Olympic champion Argentina. Guagua was also nominated for the Ecuador squad for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
