Baqueira-Beret is a ski resort in the heart of the Spanish Pyrenees and belongs to the Catalan province of Lleida . The altitude of the area is between 1,500 and 2,510 meters at Cap de Baqueira .

description

After Grandvalira (Andorra), Baqueira-Beret is the second largest winter sports area in the Pyrenees and the largest in Spain. It is located in the uppermost valley sections of the Val d'Aran (Naut Aran) and the Pallars Sobirà (Valls d'Àneu). The ski slopes are spacious and open and partly surrounded by forest.

The ski area is divided into three different areas: Baqueira, Beret and Bonaigua. The ski station of Baqueira-Beret offers, thanks to its orientation in a westerly direction (Atlantic Ocean), good snow conditions and ideal slope conditions throughout the winter season. With an altitude difference of more than 1,000 m and an impressive total length, the slopes contribute to the fact that Baqueira-Beret is one of the best ski areas in Spain. Former Spanish King Juan Carlos visits this ski resort regularly.

Both the areas of the Val d'Aran and the Pallars Sobrià are of outstanding natural beauty and include more than 50 small villages with the typical houses made of natural stone and wood and very old Romanesque churches.

The development of Baqueira began in the 1960s on an initiative of the local authorities of the Val d'Aran. A small group of people led by Jorge Jordana de Pozas and Luis Arias founded the ski station in the village of Naut Aran because of the good snow conditions in this area.

Today Baqueira-Beret is one of the most extensive and popular ski areas on the Iberian Peninsula with more than 100 kilometers of slopes. There are currently plans to expand the area towards Pallars Sobirà, but these are met with resistance from environmentalists.
