Eduardo Estiguar Hurtado Roa (born January 12, 1969 in Esmeraldas ) is a former Ecuadorian football player ( striker ).

Until June 4, 2005 he was the record scorer for the Ecuadorian national team with 26 goals (in 74 games between 1992 and 2000) . That day, Agustín Delgado replaced him when he scored the goal to make it 2-0 against Argentina .

The 1.85 m tall Hurtado, whose brawny style of play earned him the name El Tanque ( Spanish for the tank / “storm tank” ), was one of the stars of Major League Soccer in the USA and currently plays in a regional third Ecuadorian league.

Club soccer

Hurtado played in his youth for Centro Juvenil in Esmeraldas and began his professional career in 1991 at UD Váldez , a defunct first division club from Milagro . In 1993 he made a brief guest appearance at FC St. Gallen in the spring and another at Colo Colo Santiago in Chile in the second half of the year . In the first half of 1994 he was under contract with Correcaminos in Mexico before moving back to CS Emelec Guayaquil in Ecuador.

After he was eighth on the IFFHS world scorers list in 1995 as a player for Emelec , the US Major League signed him for their first season, in which he scored 21 goals for the Los Angeles Galaxy and finished second on the scorers list (behind Roy Lassiter ). Galaxy lost 3-2 in the cup final against DC United that year , with Hurtado making it 1-0 for his team. He was voted one of the best eleven players of the season and took part in the All-Star Game . In the 1998 season, Hurtado was given to the MetroStars . After their decline in 1999, Hurtado moved to New England Revolution for the 2000 season , but where he was released after two games. During his time in the USA, Hurtado played at the end of the year in the American season break for Ecuadorian clubs, in particular for LDU Quito and Barcelona SC Guayaquil .

After his engagement in Major League Soccer ended, Hurtado played in Argentina (with Argentinos Juniors ), in Scotland (with Hibernian Edinburgh ) and in Chile (with Universidad de Concepción ) as well as with LDU Quito , El Nacional Quito and Audaz Octubrino (from Machala ) in Ecuador. In December 2004 he tried a comeback in US indoor soccer, but where he was fired after less than a month at Cleveland Force due to adjustment difficulties. Since 2005 he has played again in his home country, first for Centro Deportivo Olmedo ( Riobamba ) and from July to December 2006 for the second division club Técnico Universitario Ambato . Since April 2007 he was registered as a player of CS Norte América , a club from Guayaquil, which competes in the third division of Ecuador played at the provincial level. Other former top division players (including José Gavica ) play for the club, and they largely organize their teams themselves. In August 2007, Hurtado was surprisingly announced as a newcomer to the Colombian first division club Deportivo Pereira , but was dropped there shortly after a coach change due to lack of fitness and returned to Ecuador. He only made a brief appearance against La Equidad . Since he was not eligible to play in Ecuador because of his move in the second half of the season, he remained without a club until December 2007. Between June and December 2008 he was with Atlético San Camilo, a Quevedo- based club of the third division in the province of Los Ríos , under contract. He has been without a club since then.

National team

In the national team, Hurtado made his debut on May 23, 1992 in a 1-1 draw against Guatemala in Guatemala City . His 74th and so far last international match he completed on September 20, 2000 in San Diego against Mexico . Hurtado took part in the tournaments for the Copa America in 1993, 1995 and 1997.
