Roy Lassiter (born March 9, 1969 in Washington, DC ) is a retired American football player and coach.

Lassiter ran from 1993 to 2004 for teams in Costa Rica , Italy and the United States. He spent most of his career in Major League Soccer , where he played from the 1996 premiere season. There he also holds the record for the most goals scored during a season.

Player career

Youth and college

Lassister was born in the US capital Washington, but grew up in Raleigh in the US state of North Carolina . There he attended Athens Drive High School , where he was part of the football school team. In his senior year, he was named North Carolina State 4-A Player of the Year. In the same year he moved with the team in the State Championship (state championship) and scored a total of 47 goals in one season. In addition to school, he played for the local club Raleigh United.

After graduating from high school, he moved to Lees-McRae College , which is located in Banner Elk . A year later he moved to North Carolina State University , where he was chosen twice in the All-ACC selection team.

First stations in Costa Rica

From 1993 to 1996 he played soccer in Costa Rica. First for lower class Turrialba and Asociación Deportiva Carmelita, from 1994 then for the first division club LD Alajuelense . After the 1994/1995 season, Lassister received offers from Mexico and Europe. Alajuelense offered the young American a $ 60,000 bonus if he continued to play for the team. Lassister agreed and was voted best foreign player of the year in 1995. In his last season he was able to win the championship title with the club.

Major League Soccer

In 1996 he moved to Major League Soccer and was given up there to Tampa Bay Mutiny . In his first season he was the top scorer with 27 goals. In October 1996 he was loaned to Italian second division club CFC Genoa . There he did not live up to expectations and could not score a goal in twelve league games.

He finished his career in 2004 with Laredo Heat in the USL Premier Development League .

National team

In total, he completed 30 international matches for the US national team . His first appearance at an international match was on January 25, 1992 against the selection of the CIS .

Coaching career

After his playing days, he became the director of coaching for the Austin United Capital Soccer Club. He held this office from 2005 to 2007. He then became vice president of Mustangs FC. He holds the USSF-A and the youth coach license. In 2010 Lassiter became part of the coaching staff of the Metros Soccer Academy.

Private

His son Ariel Lassiter also plays soccer and is active for the Los Angeles Galaxy reserve team in the United Soccer League .
