Major League Soccer 2014

The 20th major league soccer season began on March 6, 2015 with the regular season and ended on October 25, 2015. From October 28, 2015, the play-offs were held, with the game for the MLS in December Cup have been completed. There were 20 teams in the league, 17 from the United States and three from Canada .

Changes compared to the 2014 season

Franchises and structures

Starting this season, two new franchises will participate. The New York City FC is the second team from the New York metropolitan area and the first team from New York City to take. With Orlando City , a team from Florida will be represented for the first time since 2002 .

The franchise CD Chivas USA stopped playing at the end of the 2014 season and will therefore no longer take part in Major League Soccer. The team belonged to the Mexican soccer club Deportivo Guadalajara until 2014 and was sold back to the MLS, whereupon all sporting activities were stopped.

These changes will also adjust the structures of the Eastern Conference and Western Conference : ten teams will compete per conference. The two new franchises, New York City FC and Orlando City SC, will belong to the Eastern Conference . Houston Dynamo and Sporting Kansas City are moving from the Eastern Conference to the Western Conference .

regulate

For the 2015 season, the ranking of the teams in the table was slightly changed in the event of a tie. While the number of goals scored had previously been compared as the next criterion for teams with the same number of points and the same number of games won, from the 2015 season the goal difference was initially decisive. The procedure corresponds to that of most other leagues worldwide.

Playoffs

Starting with the 2015 season, six (previously five) teams will reach the playoffs in each conference and in the knockout round the third will play against the sixth and the fourth against the fifth will each play a game without a second leg in the stadium of the higher-placed team.

media

For the 2015 season, a new contract on the broadcasting rights for Major League Soccer was negotiated with the television channels ESPN , Fox Sports and the Spanish-speaking Univision Deportes . This contract continues the collaboration with ESPN and Univision and is enhanced with broadcasts through Fox Sports. The transmitter NBC Sports does not transfer any more games. This agreement, signed in May 2014, provides that games that take place on Sunday afternoons will be broadcast on ESPN2. The games on Sunday evening will be shown on Fox Sports 1. A Friday night game is broadcast by UniMás or Univision Deportes Network. The play-off games are alternately broadcast by the two channels ESPN and Fox.

1 Toronto FC, Vancouver Whitecaps and Montreal Impact cannot qualify for the CONCACAF Champions League via Major League Soccer because the three teams come from Canada and the starting places are allocated by state. If the teams finish the season on a qualifying place for the Champions League, these starting places are automatically assigned to the next lower team. The three Canadian teams can only qualify for this competition through the Canadian Championship .

Goal scorers

The following list contains the ranking of the regular season scorers . The first place winner at the end of the regular season , Sebastian Giovinco , won the 2015 Golden Shoe.

With the same number of goals scored, the number of goal preparations and then the lower number of minutes played were decisive for the placement.

National cup competitions

The 17 US MLS teams compete in the 2015 Lamar Hunt US Open Cup , while the three Canadian MLS teams contest the 2015 Canadian Championship . The two tournaments are the cup rounds of the USA and Canada, which are played in the knockout system. The winners qualify for the CONCACAF Champions League .

Sporting Kansas City won the US Open Cup. The Vancouver Whitecaps were successful at the Canadian Championship.

International competitions

Unlike the MLS season, the Champions League is played in a season that begins in June and ends in May of the following year. The teams that qualify through the 2015 competitions will therefore only play in the 2016/17 Champions League season .

In addition to the cup winners of the two countries, the winners of the Eastern and Western Conference from the regular season and the winners of the MLS Cup also qualify for the 2016/17 Champions League season, provided they come from the USA. If one of the Canadian teams wins the Eastern or Western Conference or the MLS Cup, or the MLS Cup winner is also the winner of one of the conferences, the next US team with the highest points in the regular season moves up to the Champions League starting position. The Canadian Association has only one starting place in the Champions League, which is filled with the winner of the Canadian Championship of the respective year.
