Siegfried "Sigi" Schmid (born March 20, 1953 in Tübingen ; † December 25, 2018 in Los Angeles , California , United States ) was a German - American football coach .
Career
Adolescent years
At the age of four, Schmid emigrated to the USA with his parents. The family later settled in the Californian city of Torrance . He completed his university studies with a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics from UCLA and an MA in Business Administration from the University of Southern California .
Player career
Between 1972 and 1975 Schmid played in midfield for the UCLA college team. In the four years with the college team he was always part of the first team and was one of the top performers in the team.
Coaching career
From 1979 he became the team's assistant coach and in 1980 head coach. He coached the college soccer team for 19 years and won the College Cup three times (1985, 1990, 1997). He was also the assistant coach of the US national team during the 1994 World Cup .
From 1999 he coached the LA Galaxy . His successes included winning the MLS Supporters' Shield in 1998 and 2002, the US Open Cup in 2001 and winning the CONCACAF Champions Cup that same year . During this time he was in charge of the US U-20 national team , which took part in the 1999 U-20 World Cup under his leadership .
2004 Schmid was fired from Galaxy and replaced by former national coach Steve Sampson . He then returned to coaching the US U-20 national team during the 2005 U-20 World Cup .
After the 2005 MLS season, Schmid became a trainer for the Columbus Crew in Ohio. In 2008 he was with his team, for the first time in the club's history of Columbus, in the championship final, which he and his team won. He was also voted “Coach of the Year” in Major League Soccer that year.
From 2009 to 2016, Schmid coached the Seattle Sounders , which he led to winning the US Open Cup in 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2014.
From July 2017 Schmid was again the coach of the LA Galaxy. He resigned in September 2018.
Private
Sigi Schmid had four children with his wife Valerie: Erik, Kurt, Kyle and Lacey. Kurt Schmid played soccer at Wake Forest University and UCLA . Kyle Schmid also played soccer at the University of California, Irvine and Orange County Blue Star .
