The Lamar Hunt US Open Cup is an American football cup competition open to all teams recognized by the United States Soccer Federation . The spectrum ranges from amateur clubs to professional teams in Major League Soccer .
The US Open Cup has existed since 1914, originally under the name National Challenge Cup . In 1999, the name was finally changed to the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup in order to honor one of the most important supporters of US football. The DeWar Cup , donated by Sir Thomas DeWar in 1914 to promote football in America, beckons the cup winners .
The professional teams of Major League Soccer have dominated the tournament since 1996, only in 1999 the Rochester Raging Rhinos (A-League, now USL First Division ) recorded a surprise win against the Colorado Rapids from the MLS.
The winner of the cup has qualified for the CONCACAF Champions League since the 2008 season .
