Paterson is the third largest city in the US state of New Jersey with 146,199 inhabitants (according to the last census in 2010) . Paterson is the administrative seat of Passaic County .
The town was named after William Paterson and was once a center of silk processing . With William Carlos Williams ' cycle of poems Paterson, the place is one of the most memorable places in American literary history .

According to the United States Census Bureau , the city has a total area of 22.6 km 2 , of which 21.9 km 2 is land and 0.8 km 2 (3.32%) is water.
Paterson is located approximately 15 miles north of Newark, New Jersey, in northeast New Jersey. At a similar distance is Manhattan ( New York ), which can be reached via Interstate 95 at Fort Lee on the George Washington Bridge over the Hudson River or further south at Weehawken through the Lincoln Tunnel .
Demographics
According to the 2000 census, there are 149,222 people, 44,710 households, and 33,353 families in the city. The population density is 6826.4 inhabitants per km 2 . 32.90% of the population is African American , 13.20% White, 0.60% Native American , 1.90% Asian , 0.06% Pacific Islander , 27.60% Other Ethnicity, and 6.17% Mixed Race , 50 , 11% are Latinos of various origins. Paterson is one of the communities in the US with the highest proportion of Muslims in the total population (around 25% of the population), including Turks , Syrians , Lebanese , Palestinians , Circassians, and Bangladeshis . In addition, Paterson is considered the capital of the Peruvian diaspora in the USA. The ethnic and cultural diversity of Paterson is also evident in the various quarters of the city, which are shaped by individual immigrant communities and bear names such as Little Lima , Little Istanbul and Little Ramallah .
Of the 44,710 households, 40.9% have children under the age of 18. 39.4% of them are married couples living together, 26.8% are single mothers, 25.4% are not families, 20.4% are single households and 7.9% are people older than 65. The average household size is 3 , 25, the average family size 3.71 people.
