Jimmy Charles
Jimmy Charles (* 1942 in Paterson , New Jersey ) is an American pop music singer .
Music career
While he was still in school, Charles performed singing in churches and public institutions. At the age of 16, his uncle encouraged him to take part in an amateur talent show at New York's Apollo Theater . Charles appeared on the show four times and won all four competitions. Then his uncle brought him together with the music producer Phil Medley, who recorded a demo tape with Charles, on which Charles sang the Phil medley song A Million to One . The tape was played to Bill Lashley, owner of the newly formed record company Promo Records. Lashley was persuaded and arranged for Charles to get a record deal with Promo. However, it was two years before Promo released a record called A Million to One in 1960 .
On August 22, 1960, A Million to One started at number 95 on the Billboard Hot 100 and achieved its best ranking on September 26 with rank 5. The title stayed in the Hot 100 for 15 weeks. In the rhythm and blues charts , A Million to One rose to 8th place. In early 1961, Charles had another Top 50 success (47th place) with his second record and the title The Age of Love . The other three Charles singles at Promo no longer reached the hit lists. In 1962, Jimmy Charles' record career was over again. The Hall of Fame accepted Charles under the One-Hit-Wonders division .
