From 1945 to 1947 he designed the newspaper comic strip Miss Cairo Jones, which Sheldon Mayer, a senior editor at DC Comics , drew attention to him.

Mayer hired Oksner as a member of the DC drawing staff. In his early years at DC, Oksner initially took on various adventure comic strips that revolved around the comic escapades of various celebrities of the time. His most frequent partner on these projects was the author E. Nelson Bridwell . When the demand for humor comics declined in the late 1960s, Oksner became increasingly active as an illustrator of superhero series such as Superman , Supergirl , Wonder Woman , Shazam! , Black Orchid , Lois Lane and - with a tendency to return to the humor subject - Ambush Bug .

As an author, he was also in charge of the Dondi comic strip created by Irwin Hasen from 1965 onwards . Together with Don Weldon he also co-developed the Strip Soozi (1967). In 1986 Oksner finally retired.
