Irwin Hasen (born July 8, 1918 in New York City , New York , † March 13, 2015 there ) was an American comic artist and cartoonist .

life and work

After graduating from Dewitt Clinton High School, Hasen studied at the National Academy of Design and the Art Students League . After starting out as a freelance in the advertising industry, he began working as a full-time comic artist in the late 1930s. In 1942, together with the writer Bill Finger , Hasen created the figure of the masked adventurer Wildcat for the first issue of the Sensation Comics series , whose stories he drew into the later 1940s. Hasen was drafted during World War II and was the editor of an army magazine until he was released in 1946.

In the 1950s, Hasen created the series The Fox for the publisher later known as Archie Comics . At this time he met Gus Edson on a trip to Europe , with whom he created the newspaper comic strip Dondi in 1955 . Hasen received the National Cartoonist Society Story Comic Strip Award for Dondi in 1961 and 1962 . In 1969 he received the National Cartoonist Society's Silver T-Square Award .

Hasen died of heart failure on March 13, 2015, at the age of 96 in Manhattan, New York .
