Stanley and his monster (Engl. Stanley and His Monster ) is the title of two comic book series , the US-American publisher DC Comics published from 1965 to 1968 or the 1,993th The series is about a little boy - Stanley Dover - who instead of a dog has a gigantic but good-natured monster as a playmate with whom he has had all kinds of hair-raising and improbable adventures.

1st series (1965–1968)

The first Stanley and his Monster series emerged from the children's comic series The Fox & The Crow in issue # 95 of 1965 Stanley and his Monster first appeared as one of several features. The adventures of the unusual couple proved so popular that the series with the number # 109 was officially renamed Stanley and His Monster from April-May and made the series 'sole feature, while the adventures of the series' previous stars, the Cartoon characters The Fox & The Crow , disappeared from the series. Due to dwindling sales, Stanley and Hist Monster was finally discontinued with the # 112 from October – November 1968. The author of all the adventures that appeared between 1965 and 1968 and the spiritual father of Stanley and his monster was the journalist and children's book author Arnold Drake ; all these stories were drawn by the artist Winslow Mortimer.

In the first story in the series - The Fox & The Crow , # 95 - six-year-old Stanley Dover accidentally (looking for a badly thrown baseball) meets a shy, gigantic creature with powerful tusks and a bushy fur that grows out of fear of others Being hidden under a bridge. He quickly gains the confidence of the only externally terrifying monster , which quickly turns out to be completely harmless, good-willed, naive and a bit simple-minded, and takes this home with him, where the creature soon settles down. A leitmotif of the series was that Stanley's parents do not take his claims to have a monster for a boyfriend seriously and consider their son's reports to be pipe dreams and fantasy stories: The monster itself is always hidden from them due to paradoxical coincidences and due to its shyness. The dominant part in the team is taken over by the adventurous and brisk Stanley, who has the habit of lisping, while the rather lazy monster is grudgingly dragged into the crazy entanglements that always arise. The monster - referred to as "Beast With No Name" or "Spot" ( Thpot ) - is joined by new and quirky creatures over the course of the series, who make their way into the Dover household without the Dover parents doing anything would notice. A leprechaun , a dwarf and a ghost who claims to be the spirit of Napoleon .

2nd series (1993)

The DC imprint Vertigo published a four-part satirical mini-series in 1993 that takes up the topic and varies in the style of the horror genre. Author of this miniseries was the writer Phil Fogilio. The miniseries reveals that Stanley's monster is actually a demon banished from hell for incapable of doing evil. After a revolution has taken place in Hell, the other demons Stanley and his monster try to separate from each other and bring their "brother" back, but finally give up this request.
