Weehawken [ ˌwiːhɑːkˈən ] is a township in Hudson County , New Jersey , USA . In the 2000 census , the population was 13,501.
On July 11, 1804, a duel between Aaron Burr , who was Vice President under Thomas Jefferson at the time , and Alexander Hamilton , one of the founding fathers of the United States, took place here. Hamilton died of an injury a day later.
geography
Weehawken is located in the New York Metropolitan Area on the west bank of the Hudson River , across from the southern half of Manhattan , between Hoboken in the south and West New York in the north. To the west is Union City , with which Weehawken shares a section of Park Avenue.
According to the United States Census Bureau , the city has a total area of 3.9 km 2 , of which 2.2 km 2 is land and 1.7 km 2 (43.71%) is water.
Demographics
As of the 2000 census, there are 13,501 people, 5,975 households and 3,059 families in the city. The population density is 6,132.7 inhabitants per km 2 . 73.05% of the population is White , 3.58% African American , 0.20% Native American , 4.67% Asian , 0.10% Pacific Islander , 13.94% from other races, and 4.47% mixed race . 40.64% are Latinos of various origins.
Of the 5,975 households, 20.1% have children under the age of 18. 35.1% of them are married couples living together, 11.7% are single mothers, 48.8% are not families, 35.6% consist of single households and 8.2% are people over 65. The average household size is 2 , 26, the average family size 3.02.
16.6% of the population are under 18 years old, 8.9% between 18 and 24, 42.4% between 25 and 44, 19.9% between 45 and 64, 12.2% older than 65. The average age is 35 years. The ratio of women to men is 100: 95.1, for people older than 18 the ratio is 100: 92.9.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 50,196 and the median income for a family is $ 52,613. Males have a median income of $ 41,307 versus $ 36,063 for females. The per capita income for the city is $ 29,269. 11.4% of the population and 9.3% of families live below the poverty line , of which 18.0% are children or adolescents under the age of 18 and 11.3% of people are over 65.
economy
The planned Formula 1 New Jersey racetrack is located in the urban area of Weehawken and West New York . The Jersey Grand Prix was to be held on the track from 2013 onwards, but this did not occur in either the 2013 or 2014 season due to financial difficulties of the organizer. There is a contract for 10 racing seasons. Large numbers of visitors are expected due to the annual race.
