Ed Polcer

Edward "Ed" Joseph Polcer (born February 10, 1937 in Paterson , New Jersey ) is an American cornetist of Dixieland Jazz .

Live and act

Polcer, who comes from a musical family, first learned the xylophone . Between 1944 and 1950 he received trumpet lessons from James Dittamo and he was principal cornet player in the local symphony orchestra. While studying mechanical engineering at Princeton University , he played in Stan Rubin's Tigertown Five . After graduation in 1954, he moved to New York City , where he performed at Jimmy Ryan’s and Carnegie Hall , but remained a semi-amateur; he also played at Grace Kelly's wedding . In the 1960s he went on a European tour with Mezz Mezzrow . He was part of the Dixi Revival in New Jersey and played there (as well as Warren Vaché senior ) in the band of Chuck Slate. On the recommendation of Bobby Hackett , he was of Benny Goodman hired (1972); he also belonged to the band of Red Balaban (until 1985). He was engaged in the house band of Eddie Condons Club, which he also led for a time. It was not until 1975 that he became a professional musician and recorded albums with this band, with Jane Harvey and with Peter Dean. He also played with Cathy Chamberlain. Since 1990 he has been to Europe repeatedly with the Eddy Condon All Stars . In 1993 he performed with Jane Jarvis .

From 1983 to 1985 he was the President of the International Association for Jazz Education .
