history

British frigates Phoenix and Roebuck are fired at from Fort Lee (left) and Fort Washington.

Fort Lee was a defensive structure of the Continental Army at the beginning of the American Revolutionary War . Together with Fort Washington , located opposite on Manhattan Island , the American Army secured the Hudson River and Manhattan against British attacks in this way . Fort Lee was named after the American General Charles Lee , an opponent of George Washington's own ranks. The fort was abandoned by the Americans shortly after the Battle of Fort Washington and taken over by the British Army.

At the beginning of film history, around 1900, when the film industry was still in its infancy and Hollywood was just emerging, Fort Lee developed a thriving film industry due to its proximity to New York City. Until it was almost completely replaced by Hollywood in the middle of the silent film era, around 1920, Fort Lee was the "film capital" of the United States, in retrospect the "Hollywood of the East Coast". All of the major film companies of the time, as well as many others, operated studios in Fort Lee, including: Independent Motion Picture Co., Peerless Studios, The Solax Company, Éclair Studios, Goldwyn Picture Corporation, American Méliès (Star Films), World Pictures, Biograph Studios , Fox Film Corporation, Pathé Frères, Metro Pictures Corporation, Victor Film Company, Selznick Pictures Corporation. The reason that the film companies moved to Hollywood was the better climate there. At that time, film productions still needed a lot of light, which could only be imitated in halls at high costs.

Two structures in Fort Lee are on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) as of November 28, 2018, the Church of the Madonna and the Palisades Interstate Parkway .
