Upper Saddle River is a city in Bergen County in the state of New Jersey , United States .

history

Archaeological finds in caves have shown that humans lived in the Saddle River valley as early as 7,000 years ago . Later, Indian tribes, the Lenni Lenape , came to the then uninhabited area. European settlers, especially from the Netherlands, reached the valley in the 17th century, but it wasn't until the settler named Iesaja Valleau settled here in the early 18th century and took 300 acres of land, around 1,213,800 m², to cultivate and raise livestock to operate. Other settlers followed later. The area was rich in wood and stones, so that temporary accommodation could initially be built. The name Upper Saddle River is said to come from two Scottish pioneers who explored the area and were reminded of the ornamental patterns burned into the leather of their saddles.

During the American Revolution , George Washington came to the settlement. Some of the preserved buildings date from the 18th century; the Hopper-Goetschius House from 1730 is now a museum. Some private houses and an original farm have also been preserved. The massive Old Stone Church was completed in 1819 and replaced a previous building from 1787. The Dutch architectural style from the early 19th century can still be seen in some of the barns that have been preserved in museums.

A modest industrialization of the area began early on. Water wheels were built on the river that powered grain mills and sawmills. Three of these mills still exist today.

In 1894 there was the opportunity for the then 100 inhabitants to vote on whether Upper Saddle River should receive the status of a borough . 50 citizens took part in the election and accepted the proposal. The new borough was then valued at $ 129,400. The place was predominantly agricultural until after the Second World War and was known for its fruit, especially apples and strawberries. The population has always remained small. In 1950, 500 people lived in Upper Saddle River. Today all farms and businesses are gone and it has become an all-residential town on the northern edge of New York. In 2000, 7741 inhabitants were registered.

The National Park Service has five buildings on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) for Upper Saddle River (as of December 23, 2018), including the New North Reformed Low Dutch Church .

Scientists know Upper Saddle River above all because of the Prentice Hall publishing house , which was founded there in 1913.
