Hackensack is a city in Bergen County , New Jersey , USA and its county seat .

According to the American surveying office, the city has a total area of 11.2 km² , of which 10.7 km² is land and 0.5 km² (4.41%) is water. It is located in the extreme northeast of New Jersey on the Hackensack River.
Demographics
As of the 2000 census, there are 42,677 people, 18,113 households and 9,545 families in the city. The population density is 3,999.4 inhabitants per km². 52.65% of the population are white , 24.65% African American , 0.45% Native American , 7.45% Asian American , 0.05% Pacific islander , 9.71% of other origins, and 5.08% are from two or more more ethnic groups . 25.92% are Hispanics or Latinos of any race.
Of the 18,113 households, 21.9% have children under the age of 18. 34.8% of them are married couples living together, 13.0% are single mothers, 47.3% are not families, 39.8% consist of single households and 9.4% are people over 65. The average household size is 2 , 26, the average family size 3.08.
18.2% of the population are under 18 years old, 8.6% between 18 and 24, 38.4% between 25 and 44, 22.3% between 45 and 64, 12.5% older than 65. The average age is 36 years. The ratio of women to men is 100: 98.7, for people older than 18 the ratio is 100: 98.5.

Culture
The sound engineer Rudy Van Gelder ran one of the most famous and sought-after recording studios in the United States in Hackensack in the 1950s before moving to Englewood Cliffs in 1959 . For record labels such as Riverside and Blue Note Records , he produced recordings for artists such as Thelonious Monk and Cannonball Adderley in his parents' living room . Monk dedicated Hackensack to the city and Van Gelder .
Phrase
In New York parlance, the expression “ I'm not from Hackensack ” is used in the sense of “ I'm not stupid ” or “ Don't sell me for being stupid ”.
