Otis Brown III (* 14. April 1974 in Hackensack (New Jersey) ) is an American drummer of modern jazz .

Live and act

Brown's parents were both musicians. His father was also a drummer, as well as a school band leader, and his mother is a singing teacher and choir director. At the age of seven he began to learn the alto saxophone under the guidance of his father . He played the saxophone and drums in school and church; then he studied at Delaware State University to become a music teacher. There Donald Byrd convinced him to go to New York City and become a musician. Brown studied there at the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music and the Thelonious Monk Institute. He first worked for Lewis Nash and Idris Muhammad , which Joe Lovano noticed in 1999. He became a founding member of the Joe Lovano Us Five quintet and recorded three albums with the band, including the Grammy- nominated Bird Songs . Since 2008 he has also worked as a drummer for Esperanza Spalding . In 2014 he released his debut album under his own name (in a quintet with Keyon Harrold , John Ellis , Robert Glasper , Ben Williams and guests). In 2019 he also performed with Anne Mette Iversen .
