Joe Lovano (2005) directs Joe Lovano's Us Five

Joe Lovano Us Five , including Us Five , is a jazz - quintet consisting of Joe Lovano ( saxophone ), Esperanza Spalding ( bass ), James Weidman ( piano ) and Francisco Mela and Otis Brown III (both drums and percussion ). The debut album Folk Art , released in 2009, and the follow-up album, Bird Songs , recorded in 2010, were album of the year at the JJA Awards in 2010 and 2011 . Bird Songs was also nominated for a Grammy for Best Jazz Instrumental Album in 2012 . On the third long player Cross Culture , released in 2013, Peter Slavov played the bass for individual songs; partly guitarist Lionel Loueke expanded the formation.

In 2010 and 2011 the group received the JJA Award in the “Small Ensemble of the Year” category . In 2010 and 2011 she also won the Down Beat magazine's critics poll in the jazz group category.
