James Weidman

James Edward Weidman Jr. (born July 23, 1953 in Youngstown , Ohio ) is an American jazz pianist and organist, who has mainly emerged in the area of M-Base .

Live and act

Weidman received his first jazz instruction from his father, a jazz saxophonist, when he was seven years old. At twelve he played the organ in church, at fourteen in his father's band. After a classical education he studied from 1975 to 1977 when Tony Leonardi at the Youngstown State University and visited in 1976 also the Jazz Camp by Jamey Aebersold .

After graduation, he moved to New York City , where he soon appeared with Cecil Payne , Harold Ousley , Bobby Watson and Pepper Adams . Between 1982 and 1990 he regularly accompanied Abbey Lincoln , with whom he also appeared at major festivals in Europe. He was part of Cassandra Wilson's band for two years . He was also part of the circle around Steve Coleman , in whose volume Five Elements he replaced Geri Allen in 1987 and of which he was a member until 1992. He also performed on Mondays at Sweet Basil in the Spirit of Life Ensemble and led the Taja quartet together with saxophonist Talib Kibwe .

He also played with Max Roach , Woody Herman , Archie Shepp , James Moody , Greg Osby , Slide Hampton , Kevin Mahogany , Gloria Lynne and Dakota Staton . He has released several albums under his own name and is also a member of the band Joe Lovano Us Five . In 2018 he was a member of Marty Ehrlich ’s quartet Philosophy of a Groove (with Jerome Harris and Ben Perowsky ).
