Brad Jones (bassist)

Bradley Christopher "Brad" Jones (* 20th May 1963 in New York City ) is an American jazz - bassist and music educator .

Jones grew up in Teaneck , New Jersey . He studied jazz bass with Lisle Atkinson and classical bass with Lou Kosma . In 1986 he received a Bachelor of Arts from Jersey City State College; in the following years he taught at schools in Waldwick and Teaneck, as well as at the Harlem School of the Arts in New York. From the mid-1980s he worked in the formation The Jazz Passengers , also with Elvis Costello , Elvin Jones , David Byrne , Muhal Richard Abrams , Ornette Coleman ( Tone Dialing , 1995), Sheryl Crow , Deborah Harry , Vernon Reid , John Zorn and Marc Ribot . In 1999 he presented the album Uncivilized Poise ( Knitting Factory ) with his funk band Aka Alias . a. David Gilmore , DK Dyson and Curtis Fowlkes contributed. The album Pouring My Heart In followed in 2003 , then the album The Embodiment, recorded in 2005 . He also belonged to the Trio Vibes and the Y2K Jazz Quartet with Bill Ware . In the 2000s he played in the Trio Asymmetry (with Derrek Phillips , Jorge Sylvester ), Bobby Previte & The New Bump, Dave Douglas & Keystone, Don Byron New Gospel Quintet, the Elliott Sharp Trio, with Misha Mengelberg and Muhal Richard Abrams.

Jones currently teaches jazz bass at Columbia University .
