David Gilmore (born February 5, 1964 in Cambridge , Massachusetts ) is an American jazz guitarist.

After studying guitar with John Baboian and Randy Roos in Boston , he studied at the University of New York City under Joe Lovano and Jim McNeely . From 1987 he worked professionally first with the M-Base Collective around Steve Coleman , later also with Ronald Shannon Jackson , Trilok Gurtu , Graham Haynes , Robin Eubanks and Lonnie Plaxico . He has been a member of the group Lost Tribe since the 1990s , and has also appeared with Me'shell Ndegeocello , Monday Michiru and Tom Lang .

In 1995 he became a member of Wayne Shorter's band . He also recorded albums with Christian McBride , Carolyn Leonhart , Don Byron and Uri Caine and toured with Bill Evans , Victor Bailey and Cindy Blackman . 2001 saw the release of the debut CD Ritualism by the band Kindread Spirits , which he founded with his brother Marque Gilmore , Matt Garrison and Aref Durvesh . Unified Presence followed in 2006 , on which Gilmore plays with Christian McBride, Jeff Tain Watts and Ravi Coltrane . In 2017 Gilmore released the album Transitions (Criss Cross).

Gilmore is also active as a producer and composer. As a sideman he was u. a. with Wayne Shorter, Cindy Blackman, Geri Allen , Steve Coleman, Alice Coltrane , Ravi Coltrane, Jack DeJohnette , Rachelle Ferrell , Cyndi Lauper , Branford and Wynton Marsalis , Dianne Reeves , The Jazz Crusaders , Art Blakey and Cassandra Wilson .
