Cindy Blackman
Cindy Blackman (* 18th November 1959 in Yellow Springs , Ohio ) is an American jazz - drummer .

Blackman began her career as a street musician in New York City . She studied for three semesters at Berklee College of Music in Boston and was a student of Alan Dawson . She returned to New York in the 1980s, where she leads her own band (with bassist Kim Clarke, among others ). She became known as the drummer for rock singer Lenny Kravitz , with whom she worked from 1993 to 2004.
She has also performed with musicians such as Jackie McLean , Joe Henderson , Don Pullen , Hugh Masekela , Pharoah Sanders , Sam Rivers , Cassandra Wilson , Angela Bofill , Bill Laswell and Buckethead . She released eight solo albums and recorded the educational video Multiplicity in 1997 . In the spring of 2009 Blackman toured Europe with Socialibrium (with Bernie Worrell and TM Stevens, among others ). She toured with Vernon Reid , John Medeski and Jack Bruce in 2008 and 2011 to reinterpret pieces by Tony Williams ; In 2012 the album Spectrum Road followed with this “supergroup” .
In 2016, Rolling Stone listed Blackman as one of only five women among the 100 best drummers of all time .
Private
Blackman attended a Baptist church when she was young , but became a Baha'i religion at the age of 18 and began studying Kabbalah in the 2000s .
On July 9, 2010, Blackman and Carlos Santana announced their upcoming marriage during a concert on their Universal Tone Tour in Chicago . The wedding took place on December 21st in Maui .
