JD Allen III

JD Allen III (born December 11, 1972 in Detroit / Michigan ) is an American jazz saxophonist .

Allen lives in New York, where he worked with musicians like Lester Bowie , George Cables , Betty Carter , Ron Carter , Jack DeJohnette , the Frank Foster Big Band , Winard Harper , Butch Morris , David Murray and Wallace Roney as well as with younger musicians like Cindy Blackman , Orrin Evans , Gerald Cleaver , Eric Revis , Marcus Gilmore , Russell Gunn , Me'shell Ndegeocello , Dave Douglas , Gerald Cleaver ( Live at Firehouse 12 ) and Nigel Kennedy .

He leads his own trio. For his debut album as a band leader ( In Search of ... ) he received the Best New Artist Award in Italy in 1999 . His second album ( Pharoah's Children ) came into the top ten of Jazziz Magazine for 2002. In 2013 he presented himself with Jaimeo Brown's Transcendence at the JazzFest Berlin . At the Down Beat Critics Poll 2020 he was the winner as a rising star in the composer category .
