Jonathan Barber

Jonathan Barber (* 1989 or 1990 in Hartford ) is an American jazz musician ( drums , composition ).

Jonathan Barber began playing drums when he was five; He made his first appearances in his parents' parish. While in high school he became a member of the Artists Collective in Hartford, an initiative founded by Jackie and Dollie McLean. There he had lessons from René McLean , who introduced him to jazz and African rhythms. After making the decision to become a musician, he then continued his studies at the University of Hartford , the Hartt School of Music (lessons with Eric McPherson ) and the Jackie McLean Institute of Jazz, where he received a Bachelor of Arts in Music Performance with Honors (Jazz Studies) .

Barber's first recordings were made in 2012 with bassist Nat Reeves (State of Emergency) ; he also worked in the Hartford jazz scene before moving to New York. There he played with musicians such as Jimmy Greene , Erykah Badu , Wallace Roney , Jeremy Pelt , Kenny Barron , John Patitucci , Kurt Elling , Terrace Martin , Charnett Moffett , Stanley Jordan , Harold Mabern , Steve Davis , Larry Willis , Abraham Burton , Jovan Alexandre , Sharel Cassity , Kris Allen and JD Allen III . He also taught at the Artists Collective, Litchfield Jazz Camp and the University of Hartford (Hartt School). In 2018 he released his debut album Vision Ahead ; In 2019 Barber led his own quintet, which included Kris Allen (saxophone), Andrew Renfroe (guitar), Taber Gable (piano) and Matt Dwonszyk (bass). In his own music he fuses jazz with elements of gospel , rock , soul and fusion . In the field of jazz he was involved in 15 recording sessions between 2012 and 2018. His role models include drummers Eric McPherson, Nasheet Waits , Lewis Nash , Ralph Peterson , Gregory Hutchinson and Gerald Cleaver .
