Erykah Badu (born February 26, 1971 in Dallas , Texas ; real name Erica Abi Wright ) is an American soul singer. Their music includes neo-soul, jazz, R&B and hip-hop.

Life

Her mother was an actress, so she was already on stage as a child and also learned to dance and sing. She dropped out of Grambling State University because she wanted to devote herself entirely to her music career, which she began with the hip-hop band Erykah Free with her cousin Robert "Free" Bradford. They played in smaller clubs in Dallas, among other things, the previous versions of the hits On & On or Appletree . They recorded the demo album Funky Cousins . Slowly they made a name for themselves and got a record deal. However, the producer felt that Erykah would sell better on her own, and so the two broke up.

Erykah Badu, 2005

She signed her first record deal as a soloist and in 1997 she had a single hit with On & On , which was also awarded the Grammy Award for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance . Her debut album Baduizm , which was awarded triple platinum, attracted a lot of attention . She led the R&B charts several times . Her biggest single hit in the US Hot 100 so far was the top ten hit Bag Lady (2000). So far, she has won four Grammys . On April 17, 2002 , Badu appeared on an aftershow by Prince at The Red Jacket music club in Dallas, Texas, as well as on June 12, 2004 at the Black Forest in Dallas.

At the end of February 2008 her fourth studio album “New Amerykah Part One” was released, in which she recalls the roots of the hip-hop movement in terms of sound technology. For the production of the album, she worked with rap producers like u. a. Madlib , who have made a name for themselves as representatives of conscious rap. In the music video of the single Window Seat , which was filmed in March 2010, she takes off her clothes at the scene of the attack on John F. Kennedy . She was then fined $ 500.

Her version of Muddy Waters ' song Mannish Boy featured in the commercial for H & M's Fall 2010 collection .

In addition, she appeared again and again in film secondary roles, including Blues Brothers 2000 , The Cider contribution or House of D .

From her relationship with André 3000 Erykah Badu has a son (born December 6, 1997) and with West Coast rapper The DOC she has a daughter (born July 5, 2004). From 2005 to 2009 she was in a relationship with the rapper Jay Electronica , with whom she also has a daughter (born February 1, 2009).
