biography

Jackson grew up as the child of musicians Otis and Seneca Jackson in Oxnard , Southern California. He moved to Los Angeles early on because there was no hip-hop scene in Oxnard that he could relate to. Later he met Peanut Butter Wolf , who promptly gave him a contract and did not set any limits in terms of creativity. He had his first release as a very awkward MC on the maxi "Throw 'Em Up" by the group Hood 2 No Good . The first major releases were as an MC and producer for Lootpack.

His first album release in 2000 under the name Quasimoto, The Unseen , caused a sensation among critics. During the creation he rapped over slowed beats, the recording was later accelerated again so that his voice sounds artificially high and fast. Madlib said in an interview with hip-hop magazine Juice that his friends jokingly call him "Hip-hop's Barry White " because of his deep voice . Since he didn't particularly like his natural pitch himself, he came up with the idea of pitching it.

In 2001 came the first album, which still had hip hop elements, but is basically a jazz album. As Yesterdays New Quintet , he released Angles Without Edges . According to the cover, the group consists of five members: Ahmad Miller, Monk Hughes, Malik Flavors, Joe McDuphrey, and Otis Jackson Jr., his real name. He later used the fictional musicians to record tribute albums for other artists under their names.

Madlib and J Rocc in Cologne 2003

As a DJ he released a collection of old dub and reggae tracks ( Blunted in the Bomb Shelter ) in 2002 and a remix of Blue Note Records releases ( Shades of Blue ) in 2003 . Two hip-hop collaborations followed in the same year. Once with J Dilla as Jaylib and with MF DOOM as Madvillain , the second being more commercially successful and also gaining greater approval from critics.

Piñata , a collaboration album with rapper Freddie Gibbs, followed in March 2014 .
