economy
The metropolitan area of Oxnard generated a gross domestic product of 48.5 billion US dollars in 2016, making it 60th among the metropolitan areas of the United States. The unemployment rate in the metropolitan region was 3.1 percent and was thus below the national average of 3.8 percent (as of May 2018). The personal per capita income in 2016 was 55,779 dollars, which means Oxnard has an above-average income level.
Oxnard has one of the few deep-water ports in California, the only one between Los Angeles and San Francisco. Formally it is on the Port Hueneme area , but is operated by Oxnard. The port is the center for the Oxnard industrial region, which focuses on light industry and sea trade.
The US military also plays an essential role in the economy of the place and the region. The Naval Air Station Point Mugu is a rocket launch site known as Seabees designated United States Naval Construction Forces have their base in Port Hueneme for the US West Coast with three battalions and a reserve battalion.
The Oxnard coastal plain is also an important agricultural area. The combination of a mild Mediterranean climate with above-average precipitation and stable groundwater resources and excellent arable land makes the region a growing area for special crops with high profit margins. Strawberries in particular are grown in Oxnard, a quarter of California's strawberry harvest comes from this small community. Other types of fruit and vegetables also come from Oxnard.
Under Oxnard there are oil sands deposits that were discovered in 1937 and have been mined on a large scale since the 1950s. They are used according to in-situ processes , which involve a high level of energy, water and chemicals. Wastewater from oil production endangers the aquifers and leads to frequent contamination of individual deep wells , with serious consequences for agriculture in the region. Because of the high cost of extracting oil using in-situ processes, extraction is only profitable if oil prices are high and environmental regulations are low. In the 21st century, apart from the Chevron Corporation, only small oil companies based in the region, mostly in Los Angeles, are producing. They are particularly threatened by fluctuations in costs and earnings and, on the other hand, generally have no reserves that allow them to eliminate environmental damage.
The company Haas Automation , one of the largest manufacturers of machine tools in the United States, headquartered in Oxnard.
