Sam McVey (born May 17, 1884 in Waelder , Texas , † December 23, 1921 in New York City ) was an American heavyweight boxer .

The hard-hitting colored Californian became a professional boxer in 1902 and boxed three times against Jack Johnson at the very beginning of his career . Johnson won all fights over 20 rounds, one by knockout in the 20th round, two on points against the then 20-year-old McVey, probably also because of his experience. When Johnson later became world heavyweight champion , he only accepted white challengers.

His most famous fight was a non-title fight against another black man, Joe Jeannette , who couldn't challenge Johnson to the title because of the color of his skin. On April 7, 1909, he met his opponent in Paris and hit him no less than 27 times, and he himself was knocked down eleven times. Finally, in the 50th round, his eyes were so swollen that the fight was broken off.

Sam McVey also competed several times against Sam Langford and Harry Wills and won the Colored heavyweight title . He died impoverished of pneumonia and Jack Johnson paid for his funeral.

In 1999, McVey was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame .
