Armando Xavier Ochoa (born April 9, 1943 in Oxnard , California ) is an American clergyman and emeritus Roman Catholic Bishop of Fresno .

Life

Armando Xavier Ochoa was born in Oxnard, California. He attended the local Santa Clara Elementary School and then the Santa Clara High School, where he graduated from school in 1961. A year later he entered St. John's Seminary in Camarillo .

Ochoa was ordained priestly on May 23, 1970 by Archbishop Timothy Manning for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles . He then served in communities in East Los Angeles , Baldwin Park, and Los Angeles . In December 1984 he was appointed pastor of the Sacred Heart Church in Los Angeles. Ochoa had been the papal honorary chaplain since 1982 .

Pope John Paul II appointed him auxiliary bishop in Los Angeles and titular bishop of Sitifis on December 23, 1986 . The Archbishop of Los Angeles, Roger Michael Mahony , donated him episcopal ordination on February 23 of the next year ; Co-consecrators were the auxiliary bishops in Los Angeles John James Ward and Juan Alfredo Arzube .

He was named bishop of El Paso on April 1, 1996, and inducted into office on June 26 of that year. The ceremony took place in the El Paso Civic Center in the presence of 4,000 believers and was presided over by Patrick Fernández Flores , Archbishop of San Antonio .

He was named bishop of Fresno on December 1, 2011 and inducted into the office on February 2 of the next year.

Pope Francis accepted his age-related resignation on March 5, 2019.
