Juan Alfredo Arzube

Juan Alfredo Arzube Jaramillo , also Juan A. Arzube , (born June 1, 1918 in Guayaquil , Ecuador , † December 25, 2007 in Los Angeles ) was auxiliary bishop in Los Angeles .

Life

Juan Alfredo Arzube studied in England and graduated from the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy , New York, with a degree in civil engineering in 1941 . After various activities he entered St. John's seminary and studied Catholic theology and philosophy . On May 5, 1954, Arzube was ordained a priest in Los Angeles and was active in pastoral care.

1971 he was by Paul VI. Appointed Titular Bishop of Civitate and Auxiliary Bishop of Los Angeles. He received his episcopal ordination on March 25, 1971, the Archbishop of Los Angeles Timothy Cardinal Manning and the Archbishop of San Francisco, Joseph Thomas McGucken , and the Bishop of Sacramento, Alden John Bell .

Bishop Arzube was the driving force behind creating a local presence in East Los Angeles . In 1973 he was appointed Vicar Apostolic for the Spanish-speaking population. In 1986 he was the first auxiliary bishop in the newly structured pastoral region " San Gabriel ".

His resignation was granted in 1993 by John Paul II .
