Joseph Thomas McGucken (born March 13, 1902 in Los Angeles , USA ; † October 26, 1983 ) was Archbishop of San Francisco .

Life

Joseph Thomas McGucken received on 15 January 1928, the sacrament of Holy Orders .

On February 4, 1941, Pope Pius XII appointed him . the titular bishop of Sanavus and ordered him to auxiliary bishop in Los Angeles . The Archbishop of Los Angeles, John Joseph Cantwell , donated him episcopal ordination on March 19 of that year ; Co- consecrators were the Bishop of Tucson , Daniel James Gercke , and the Bishop of Monterey-Fresno , Philip George Scher .

On October 26, 1955, Pius XII appointed him. to Coadjutor Bishop of Sacramento . Joseph Thomas McGucken became Bishop of Sacramento on January 14, 1957, succeeding the late Robert John Armstrong .

On February 19, 1962, Pope John XXIII appointed him . to the Archbishop of San Francisco. The inauguration took place on April 3 of the same year.

Pope Paul VI accepted on February 16, 1977 the resignation put forward by Joseph Thomas McGucken for reasons of age.
