The Roman Catholic Diocese of Tucson (lat .: Dioecesis tucsonensis ) is in the United States located Roman Catholic diocese , based in Tucson , Arizona . It spans nine counties in the state: Gila, Graham, Greenlee, Pinal, Cochise, Santa Cruz, Pima, Yuma, and La Paz.

history

In 1868 the Vicariate Apostolic of Arizona was founded from areas of the diocese of Santa Fe . In 1891 the Vicariate Apostolic lost parts of its territory to the diocese of Dallas, which was established in the previous year . On May 8, 1897, the elevation to the diocese took place. The Apostolic Vicariate of Arizona was now called the Diocese of Tucson.

On March 3, 1914, the dioceses of Dallas, San Antonio and Tucson ceded areas from which the diocese of El Paso was established. Further territorial losses were made on December 16, 1939 to the Gallup diocese and on June 28, 1969 to the Phoenix diocese .
