The US military ordinariate ( Fœderatarum Civitatum Americæ Septemtrionalis ) is a military ordinariate in the United States and is responsible for the armed forces of the United States . The ordinariate includes the areas of the United States Minor Outlying Islands .
history
The US military ordinariate provides pastoral care to members of the US armed forces of Roman Catholic denominations. It was made by Pope Pius XII. Established on September 8, 1957 as a military vicariate . According to a resolution between the Holy See and the USA, the seat of the US military ordinariate is in Washington, DC . On July 21, 1986, Pope John Paul II made it an archdiocese with the Apostolic Constitution Spirituali militum curae . As the only Roman Catholic diocese in the USA, the military ordinariate does not have its own cathedral, but uses the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception for ceremonial occasions .
