history
The Diocese of Springfield in Illinois was on July 29, 1853 by Pope Pius IX. from cessions of territory of the Diocese of Chicago established as the Diocese of Quincy . The diocese of Quincy was renamed the Diocese of Alton on January 9, 1857 . On January 7, 1887, the Diocese of Alton gave up parts of its territory to establish the Diocese of Belleville . The diocese of Alton was renamed the Diocese of Springfield in Illinois on October 26, 1923 .
The Diocese of Springfield in Illinois is subordinate to the Archdiocese of Chicago as a suffragan .
