The Diocese of Marquette ( Latin : Dioecesis Marquettensis ) is a Roman Catholic diocese located in Michigan in the United States , with its seat in Marquette .

history

Pope Pius IX founded the Apostolic Vicariate of Upper Michigan on July 29, 1853 from cessions of territory of the Diocese of Detroit .

On January 9, 1857 it was raised to the diocese of Sault Sainte Marie , which was subordinate to the Archdiocese of Cincinnati as a suffragan diocese. The name of the Diocese of Sault Sainte Marie - Marquette took it on October 23, 1865.

On January 12, 1875, it became part of the Ecclesiastical Province of the Archdiocese of Milwaukee . On January 3, 1937, it took its current name. On May 22 of the same year it became part of the Ecclesiastical Province of the Archdiocese of Detroit.

The Diocese of Marquette includes the Upper Peninsula , the Counties Alger, Baraga, Chippewa, Delta, Dickinson, Gogebic, Houghton, Iron, Keweenaw, Luce, Mackinac, Marquette, Menominee, Ontonagon and Schoolcraft of the state of Michigan.
