The Passionists ( Latin : Congregatio Passionis Jesu Christi , order abbreviation : CP ) are a Catholic religious order that was founded in 1720 by St. Paul of the Cross was founded. Its main characteristic is the special devotion to the passion of Christ . Hence its official name: Congregation for the Passion of Jesus Christ. In addition to the three evangelical counsels (poverty, chastity, obedience), the members of the order also take a fourth vow, namely: To promote pious veneration and grateful memory of the suffering and death of our Lord Jesus Christ among the faithful ( memoria passionis ).

The order's dress consists of a black habit , the Passion mark, the rosary and a black leather belt.

The first and oldest convent of the Passionists is located on Monte Argentario near Orbetello in Tuscany . The Passionists are also most widespread in Italy . In Germany the order is represented by the Dutch Province and the South German-Austrian Vice Province. The only Dutch community is in Marienberg (Übach-Palenberg) . Communities of the southern German-Austrian vice province are located in Munich - Pasing , where the first branch in Germany was established in Gatterburg Castle , in Schwarzenfeld in the Upper Palatinate and in the former Capuchin monastery ( Schottenkloster) in Eichstätt . The Passionists' branch in Marienmünster Abbey between Steinheim and Höxter was the only branch in northern Germany that was maintained by the Dutch province, but was given up on August 31, 2014. In Austria the pilgrimage church Maria Schutz am Semmering is looked after by the Passionists. In addition to Italy, the congregation is particularly widespread in America and Asia . The congregation currently has 2200 members with 400 offices in 54 countries. Joachim Rego has been General Superior since 2012, succeeding Ottaviano D'Egidio and José Augustín Orbegozo Jáuregui.

The female branch is made up of the Passionists , and there is also a lay brotherhood ( Comunità Laicale Passionista (CLP), Passion Brotherhood ).
