Gemma Umberta Pia Galgani (born March 12, 1878 in Camigliano, district of Capannori , † April 11, 1903 in Lucca ) was an Italian saint and mystic . She is counted among the stigmatized and also referred to as the "daughter of the passion". She described her experiences and visions in an autobiography addressed to her father.

Life

Gemma Galgani is best known for her mystical visions. From a very young age she felt called to a consecrated life . She tried to enter a monastery several times , but was repeatedly turned away because of her poor health. She therefore took a private vow of eternal virginity .

On June 8, 1899, that year the eve of the Sacred Heart Festival , stigmata are said to have appeared on her body . The wounds of Galgani, which are regarded as stigmata by the church, were examined by the doctor Pietro Pfanner. Galagani had known him since childhood. For example, he gave the 10-year-old a “hysterical cough” finding, that is, a cough without a physical finding. He also noticed that her palms were completely numb. At that time he concluded that Galgani had a “form of neurosis”.

Pfanner examined Galgani again on March 3, 1899 and attested her hysterical paralysis. When the alleged hand wounds were examined on September 8, 1899, they turned out to be applied blood without wounding the palms of the hands. Pfanner suspected a simulation and was confirmed by Galgani's foster mother, who had found a sewing needle on the floor.

Galgani wrote her autobiography in the spring of 1902, two years after she was stigmatized. In it, she also describes her alleged stigmatization. The worship of Gabriel of the painful Mother of God began, Galgani describes it in her autobiographical descriptions after she had read his biography.

Gemma Galgani was born in 1933 by Pope Pius XI. beatified ; In 1940 she spoke to Pope Pius XII. holy . Pius XII. called the saint "star of his pontificate". She was buried in the habit of the Passionists and is counted among the saints of this order. Her feast day in the liturgy is May 16 .
