Maria Schutz is the largest Marian pilgrimage site in southern Lower Austria.

The first chapel was built in 1721 and got its name from the Franciscan Benignus Seyfried from Mürzzuschlag . According to legend, plague sufferers from Schottwien built it after they were cured by the holy Bründl . This source still rises behind the main altar of the pilgrimage church.

The pilgrimage church was rebuilt in 1728. The foundation stone was laid by Count Joseph Leopold Julius von Walsegg- Stuppach .

In 1783 Joseph II made it a parish church.

A fire in 1826 destroyed the bells and onion domes of the church. An earthquake badly damaged the church and rectory. In 1840 Prince Alois von Liechtenstein took over the patronage of the pilgrimage site.

In 1925 the Passionists founded the monastery (Kloster Maria Schutz) , the only one of the order in Austria, and took over the pilgrimage church.

On the afternoon of April 7, 1945, one month before the end of the Second World War , Maria Schutz was occupied by the Red Army . The alarm units of the German Wehrmacht stationed in the area , which later became part of the German 9th Mountain Division (East) , drove the Soviet soldiers out again in a counterattack on April 8th. The area around the church and monastery was not attacked by the Soviet infantry until the end of the war and was defended like a base by the Wehrmacht soldiers.

On the occasion of the 250th anniversary, the church was renovated inside and out in 1970. In 1995 the onion domes were renewed.

Both the parish church and the Passionist Monastery are under monument protection.

organ

The magnificent organ case was created by Johann Hencke (Vienna) in 1741. This organ was badly damaged in a fire in 1826. In 1899, the organ was rebuilt by Albert Mauracher (1858–1917, Salzburg) with a pneumatic pocket drawer, which in 1970 failed. From 1972 to 1974 a new organ was built by the Walcker-Mayer company in Guntramsdorf with mechanical slide chests and 24 registers (24 / II / P). The Rückpositiv, which was shut down in 1899, was reactivated by the Walcker-Mayer company in the course of the construction of the new organ in 1972–1974.

Individual evidence

  1. Seyfried stayed there during the construction period and particularly appreciated the location of the place. When he fell asleep under a birch tree and later woke up again, he called out that if he had to baptize the place, he would call it "Maria Schutz".
